How Early Should I Arrive at Toronto Pearson?

The short answer

For most travellers leaving Toronto Pearson, the sensible target is about two hours before a domestic flight within Canada and about three hours before an international flight. US-bound flights sit in the middle at roughly two and a half to three hours, and there is a specific reason for that which we explain below.

These are arrival times at the terminal, not the moment you walk up to your gate. They give you room to check a bag, clear security, and reach your gate without running. If you travel with only a carry-on and already have your boarding pass, you have more slack, but Pearson is a large, busy airport and it is easier to relax with a coffee than to sprint.

• Domestic flights (within Canada): about 2 hours before departure
• US flights: about 2.5 to 3 hours, because of US preclearance
• International flights (non-US): about 3 hours before departure
• Any departure before 9 a.m.: budget a full 3 hours regardless of destination

Why US flights need extra time: preclearance

If you are flying to the United States from Pearson, you do not clear US customs and immigration when you land in the States. You clear it here, before you board, on the Canadian side of the airport. This is called US preclearance, and it means US-bound passengers pass through a second inspection area in addition to normal security.

That extra step is why we suggest closer to three hours for US flights, and the full three hours in peak travel season. The preclearance queue is the least predictable part of the whole trip. It can be quiet one morning and long the next with no warning, so it pays to give it margin rather than gamble.

The upside is real once you land: because you have already cleared US customs, you arrive at your US destination as a domestic passenger and walk straight out. The time you spend at Pearson buys you a faster arrival on the other end.

The early-morning rush is its own thing

If your flight leaves before 9 a.m., treat it as a special case and plan on a full three hours no matter where you are going. Early departures cluster together, so a large share of the day's travellers all hit security in the same short window, and the lines build fast.

US preclearance in particular is hardest to predict in the early morning, roughly the five to eight a.m. stretch, and again in the late afternoon. Those are the times we see travellers cut it closest and get caught out. An early flight is exactly when you least want to be relying on everything going perfectly.

Things that change the math

The two, two-and-a-half, and three hour figures are good defaults, but a few factors push you toward the longer end of each range. Add cushion if any of these apply to you.

• You are checking bags rather than travelling carry-on only
• You are flying during a holiday period or a busy travel season
• You do not already have a mobile or printed boarding pass
• You are travelling with young children, or anyone who needs a slower pace
• You need to return a rental car, refuel, or sort out parking before you reach the terminal
• It is winter and weather could slow both the roads and the airport

Which terminal, and getting to the right one

Pearson has two passenger terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, and they are not next to each other. Your airline decides which one you use, and it is printed on your booking and boarding pass, so check it before you travel rather than assuming.

Arriving at the wrong terminal is one of the few mistakes that can turn a comfortable buffer into a stressful one, because moving between the two takes time. If you are unsure, confirm the terminal with your airline the day before. Stop guessing when to leave home

The hardest part of all this is not the airport rule, it is the drive. Knowing you want to be at the terminal three hours early does not tell you when to walk out your front door, because that depends on where you live in the GTA, the time of day, and the traffic.
