Downtown Toronto to Pearson is a well-worn route, and there is no single right answer. What is right depends on where you are staying, how much you are carrying, how many of you there are, and how early you have to be at the terminal. Below we lay out the four options honestly. Each one wins for someone.
We have driven this airport since 1976, so we will tell you plainly where a private car is not the obvious choice. If you are near Union Station with a carry-on and time to spare, the train may be all you need.

The UP Express train
The Union Pearson Express runs from Union Station straight to Pearson Terminal 1. It is quick, the fare is fixed so there are no surprises, and trains leave often. If you are already downtown near Union and travelling light, it is genuinely hard to beat on speed and predictability.
The honest limits: it serves Union Station and the airport, not your door and not your suburb. You still have to get yourself and your bags to Union, then from Terminal 1 to your gate or, on the way home, from Terminal 1 to wherever you are actually going. With several bags, small children, or an early departure before you feel like navigating a station, that first and last mile is where the train stops being the easy option.
Taxi and rideshare
A licensed airport taxi is a dependable door-to-door choice. Fares are flat to set zones and metered otherwise, there is no surge pricing, and cabs run 24 hours a day. You can usually flag one or find a stand without much planning, which matters when plans change late.
Rideshare can be the cheapest option when demand is low. The catch is that demand is rarely low when you need to reach an airport: rush hour, bad weather, weekends, and early mornings are exactly when prices climb, and those are exactly when flights leave. On arrival you also become the one doing the finding, walking out to the pickup lanes and matching your driver in a crowd of cars after a long flight.
A private chauffeur

How long does it take to get from downtown Toronto to Pearson?
The UP Express train covers Union Station to Terminal 1 in roughly 25 minutes. By road the time depends entirely on traffic, so a private car or taxi can be quicker or slower than the train depending on the hour. For an early morning departure the roads are usually clear and a car is very fast.
Is the UP Express or a private car better?

A private car wins the moment you add bags, a group, an early start, or the need to be picked up at your actual door rather than at a station.
Does rideshare surge on the way to the airport?
It can, and airport trips have a habit of falling in surge windows. Rush hour, weekends, bad weather, and early mornings all push rideshare prices up, and those are common times to fly. A private chauffeur fare is quoted flat when you book, so it does not move with demand.
How do I find my driver at Pearson when I fly home?
