Laurier's Brantford campus is unusual: instead of a ring road and a quadrangle it occupies restored buildings through the middle of the city, so the address a student is given is a street address downtown rather than a gate off a highway. That makes the arrival easier to get wrong and easier to fix, because a driver who has the building name goes to that door and stops.

Brantford is about a hundred kilometres from the airport by way of Highway 403, an hour or so when the Hamilton stretch is behaving. The fare is one published out-of-town rate for the whole city with HST inside it, the same to a residence on George Street as to a house on the far side of town, and the same again on the way back. It is paid to the driver at the end, by card or cash in the car.

For a first-year student flying in, this is the last hour of a very long day and the one that a parent overseas can actually control. The sedan carries three passengers and three checked bags. A student moving in for the year, or a family arriving together, should take the SUV with its six seats and five checked bags.

Where the car goes on campus

• The residences are converted landmarks, and their names are worth putting in the booking notes: Post House on George Street, once the city's post office and customs house, Expositor Place in the old newspaper building, and Grand River Hall, which also holds classrooms and offices.
• Because the campus is woven into the downtown, there is no single gate to be dropped at. Name the building and the driver goes to it; give only the university's name and the car ends up at whichever address the map picks.
• One published rate covers the whole of Brantford, so a shared student house away from the core costs the same to reach as the residence on George Street, and there is no premium for an address the driver has to look up.
• The drive is roughly an hour when the 403 through Hamilton is clear and can run to an hour and twenty-five minutes when it is not. Nothing about that changes the fare, which was set when the trip was booked.
• Laurier also has campuses in Waterloo, a separate city with its own published rate. Enter the campus you are attending so the fare and the driver both match the trip you are actually taking.
